Work in Sittard on process safety in complex engineering projects. Lead Design Hazard Studies and turn regulatory changes and incident findings into practical, safe design standards and work processes.
The role
As an HSE Engineer, you help embed HSE and process safety principles throughout the relevant phases of process design projects. You work on complex projects for production plants and collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and countries, while keeping project deadlines in view.
You monitor international HSE legislation, process safety practices and relevant IEC standards. You advise management on their impact on projects and translate new requirements and insights into standards, guidelines, work processes, tools and technical deliverables.
Responsibilities
- Lead Design Hazard Studies (DHS) and ensure the required measures are incorporated into the design. Apply your knowledge of HAZOP and other risk assessment methods.
- Maintain HSE design standards, guidelines and DHS standards, ensuring that methods reflect best practice, legislation and international standards.
- Monitor project HSE performance, prepare reports and conduct HSE assessments at plant sites and equipment manufacturing workshops.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences and near misses during commissioning, plant operation or equipment manufacturing. Maintain the incident management system, follow up on actions and translate findings into improvements.
- Work with project teams, management, professional bodies and internal and external stakeholders. Support tenders and presentations when needed.
- Prepare and deliver HSE training. Support audits against ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and SA8000, as well as occupational safety prevention activities.
What you bring
- A technical bachelor's degree, preferably in Chemical Engineering, together with relevant HSE qualifications and certifications. Further training in safety engineering is an example of relevant preparation.
- More than 10 years of experience in process technology, along with relevant HSE experience at plant sites.
- Broad engineering industry experience and experience with risk assessments in complex, highly regulated project environments. Relevant methods include process hazard analysis, LOPA, event tree analysis, root cause analysis and QRA.
- In-depth knowledge of process technology, process safety design principles, international standards, DHS/HAZOP and other risk assessment methods. Experience with urea, ammonia and nitric acid is preferred.
- Strong spoken and written English, effective communication skills and the ability to motivate colleagues to comply with HSE standards.
